About The Village Feast

Village Feast Inc. is a non-profit children’s charity in Souris, Prince Edward Island. It supports local and global initiatives that aim to improve the lives of children in our world. The word village refers to the intimacy of the local communities we belong to and the global village we are all connected to. Feast is a celebration of abundance and sharing which reflects our view of the world. The Village Feast raises money, but it does not do program implementation. All funds raised go to organizations to do projects for people in need. It is people, helping people, help people. Some beneficiaries are Farmers Helping Farmers, who build school cookhouses in Kenya, Africa, on behalf of Village Feast, the Souris Food Bank, Souris Community Fridge, Souris School Regional Breakfast Program, PEI School Lunch program and Coats for Kids.

About Farmers Helping Farmers

The cookhouses built with support from the Souris Village Feast allow schools in Kenya to offer two meals a day. The Village Feast also supports gardener salaries to run the cookhouses. The students are fed uji, or porridge, in the morning. They also serve githeri, a maize and bean stew, for lunch. Attendance has improved at the schools with the cookhouses, as have the marks. Students used to have to go home for lunch, and some would not return for the afternoon because of the distance they had to walk. The cookhouses have allowed them to stay and helped them focus on their studies with bellies full.
